Holistic Health Care
care that addresses the many dimensions that comprise the whole person
Health
The state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Morbidity
How frequently the disease occurs
Mortality
The number of deaths resulting from a disease
Disease
Medical term referring to pathologic chances in the structure or function of the body or mind
Illness
the response of the person to a disease, a process in which the persons level of functioning is changed when compared with a previous level
Acute Illness
Usually has a rapid onset of symptoms and lasts only a relatively short time.
Chronic illness
broader term that encompasses a number of different physical and mental alterations in health.
This illness usually has one or more of the following characteristics
Chronic
It is permanent change
It causes, or is caused by irreversible alterations in normal anatomy and physiology
It requires special patient education for rehabilitation
it requires a long period of care or support
Remission
The disease is present but the person does not experience symptoms
Exacerbation
symptoms of the disease reappear
Health equity
the attainment of the highest level of health for all people
Health disparity
a particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage
Social determinants of health
the conditions in the environments in which people are born
Institutional or structural racism
systemic distribution of resources, power and opportunity in our society to the benefit of people who are White and to the exclusion of people of color
Unconscious or implicit bias
prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group as compared to another in a way that is usually considered unfair
Antiracism
every nurse engages in the practice of actively combating racism, including the structures, institutions and practices
Diversity
Welcoming individuals of all races, religions, nationalities, cultures, ages, sexual orientations, identities
Inclusion
giving everyone a sense of purpose and belonging, a feeling of being valued.
Equity
ensuring that everyone the same, it is about ensuring that everyone has access to the conditions they need to thrive.
Vulnerable populations
racial and ethnic minorities, those living in poverty, women, children, older adults, residents of rural areas, low income areas of cities, and people with disabilities and special health care needs.
Basic human need
Something essential that must be met for emotional and physiologic health and survival.
Human dimensions
Factors influencing a persons health-illness status, health beliefs, and health practices
Physical dimension
Includes genetic inheritance, age, developmental level, race, and sex assigned at birth
Emotional dimension
How the mind affects body functions and responds conditions also influence health
Intellectual Dimension
Encompasses cognitive abilities, educational background and past experiences
Environmental Dimension
the environment has many influences on health and illness
Sociocultural Dimension
Health practices and beliefs are strongly influenced by a persons economic level, lifestyle, family and culture
Spiritual Dimension
Spiritual beliefs and values are important components of a persons health and illness behaviors
Risk Factor
something that increases a persons chance for illness or injury
Health Promotion
the behavior of a person is motivated by a personal desire to increase well-being and health potential
Primary health promotion
work towards promoting health, focusing on people or groups. Examples of primary level activities include immunization clinics, family planing services
Illness prevention
preventing the development of diseases
Secondary health and illness prevention
focus on screening for early detection of disease with prompt diagnosis and treatment of any found. goals consist of identifying the illness and reducing/reversing its severity or providing a cure.
Tertiary health promotion and illness prevention
Begins after illness is diagnosed and treated with the goal of reducing disability and helping rehabilitate patients to a maximum level of functioning.
Health belief model
focuses on what people believe or perceive to be true about themselves in relation to their health.
Health Promotion Model
Developed to illustrate how people interact with their environment as they pursue health.
Health illness continuum
One way to conceptualize a persons level of health, views health as a constantly changing state
Agent host environment model
views the interaction between an external agent, a susceptible host, and the environment as causes of disease in a person
Precontemplation
first stage in the stages of change model, logical starting point for where there is no intention of changing behavior the person may be unaware that the problem exists
Contemplation
second stage of the stages of change model, the person becomes aware that there is a problem
Determination
third stage of the stages of change model, now the decision is made to move forward and preparation ensues, people begin to make realistic plans with small steps that anticipate any difficulties
Action
the fourth stage of the stages of change model, when someone publicly begins to implement the plan and begins to achieve success, it reinforces the decision to change behavior.
Maintenance, relapse and recycling
The final stage of the stages of change model, during this stage people focus on sustaining the new behavior in a stage that can last from 6 months to 5 years
