• large republics are positive

• need diversity in factions to prevent abuse of power 

• causes of factions cannot be stopped, so it has to be controlled instead

Federalist 51

• checks and balances

• separation of powers

• prevent abuses of power/tyranny

• federalism → “safeguard” 

• structural safeguard → branches and levels of government protect ind rights

• Executive branch

• unitary or unity → efficiency (president is the only making decision)

• Judicial = least dangerous → appointed 

  • no election (nominated by president & confirmed by senate) & lifetime appointment, can make whatever fucking decision they want without being influenced by public opinion 

• checks and balances → judgment of judges leading to judicial review
