contracts cheeks to narrow mouth/food bolus

Depressor Anguli Oris
Depresses and pulls corner of mouth inferiorly and laterally (frown)

Depressor Labii Inferioris
lips, exposing teeth (flossing), depresses and protrudes lower lip; pulls lips laterally

Levator Anguli Oris
Elevates corner of mouth (bilateral - smile, unilateral smirk)

Levator Labii Superioris
lip/teeth exposed; elevates and protrudes upper lip (shows upper teeth)

Mentalis
elevates medial chin skin; protrudes lower lip (pout); helpful in judging expressions in pediatric autism/ stroke patients

Orbicularis Oris
Closes and shapes lips; kissing/straw drinking; patients w/ dementia/post stroke will experience spillage caused by weakness in this muscle

Platysma
Depresses jaw and corners of mouth; tightens neck fascia

Risorius
retracts corners of mouth (fake smile); smile not up or down, straight out

Zygomaticus major
elevates and pulls corner of mouth laterally; teeth/smile/laugh
Levator Labii Superioris Alaeque Nasi
Flares nostrils; assist to elevate upper lip

Nasalis - Alar Fibers
Flares nostrils
Nasalis - Transverse fibers
constricts nostrils (sniffing)

Procerus
pulls eyebrows down; concentration
Orbicularis Oculi
Closes eyelids; squinting or expressing pain
Occipitofrontalis
Elevates one or both eyebrows

Masseter
Bilaterally; elevates & protracts mandible

Temporalis
Bilaterally; elevates and retracts mandible

Medial Pterygoid
Bilaterally; elevates & protracts mandible
Lateral Pterygoid (on quiz)
open jaw/mouth bilaterally: depresses & protracts mandible
