What is your key question?
To what extent has the regeneration of the Albert Docks had a beneficial impact on the local area?
What are your sub questions?
To what extent have socio-economic opportunities been created and To what extent has the environment been improved?
Where is your location?
Albert Docks, located along the River Mersey, Liverpool
What mkaes your site accessible?
Albert Docks is a relatively small area so it’s easy to collect data in one day
What is Step 1 of the questionnaire method?
Before visiting the site, we created 9 closed questions to gather public opinion on a range of information that could be analysed using quantitative techniques
What is Step 2 of the questionnaire method?
At the site, we used systematic sampling to avoid bias in terms of age, gender and ethnicity. We asked every 5th person who passed us when standing over the bridge
What is the final step of the questionnaire method?
We asked questions until we achieved 20 questionnaires to ensure our data set was large enough to achieve a reliable conclusion
What is Step 1 of the re-photography method?
Before visiting the site, we selected 4 historic photographs from reliable secondary sources to show what the Docks looked like before the regeneration
What is Step 2 of the re-photography method?
At the site, we located the position where 4 historic photographs had been taken. We then took photographs at these locations to show how the docks looked in the present day
What is the final step of the re-photography method?
When taking the photographs, we ensured that the location, aspect and scale were as close to the original as possible to allow an accurate comparison
What is the EQS method?
At 2 locations, complete a survey so the locations can be compared for a representation which helps us make a judgement on the environmental quality
What are your presentation techniques?
Radar graph (for EQS), Pie chart (for questionnaire), annotated photos
What are the positives for the radar graph presentation technique?
It clearly compares the two areas on one visual, it’s easy to see which aspects scored higher or lower at a glance
What are the negatives for the radar graph presentation technique?
People unfamiliar with radar graphs might misunderstand
What are the positives for the pie charts presentation technique?
They’re simple and visually clear which is easy to understand, and they’re good for showing proportions and comparisons
What are the negatives for the pie charts presentation technique?
.
What are the positives for the annotated photos presentation technique?
They’re visually realistic and effective, they show real world evidence
What are the negatives for the annotated photos presentation technique?
It’s hard to compare one image to another unless it’s a clear before and after
What is the analysis for the socio-economic opportunites created?
The range of shops/services available had majority ratings of 4s and 5s, with only 2 people voting a 1. When including all 20 responses, 25% answered N/A, maybe because they’re unemployed or retired but the range of shops/services is still seen as a major success of the regeneration
What is the analysis for the extent of the environment improved?
This had the most positive responses - 80% gave the appearance a 5 and the remaining 20% gave it a 4. This shows that people believe the environmental quality has massively improved as a result of regeneration and investment boosted public perception
What is the conclusion for the socio-economic opportunities created?
Based on the data, regeneration has created noticable socio-economic improvements, especially in the range of shops/services, which received high ratings.
The job ratings were mostly positive, although some said N/A, showing not everyone feels included in those changes.
Overall, the regeneration has improved local access to shops/services and possibly boosted the economy
What is the conclusion for the extent of the environment improved?
The results strongly suggest that the environmental quality has been improved to a high extent. Most gave the aesthetics of the area a 5, and no ratings were lower than a 4.
The annotated photo also supports this, showing cleaner, more modern public spaces.
This shows that the visual appearance and environmental conditions of Liverpool have improved as a result of regeneration.
Evaluating, what strengths did the questionnaire have?
It was midday and nearer to lunchtime so more people would have been passing by, every 5th person was questioned to reduce bias and ensure that it’s fair
Evaluating, what strengths did the EQS have?
Made it easy to compare sites
The overall shape of each site’s graph showed whether one area had consistently higher/lower scores.
Helped to quickly spot anomalies
These strengths increased the clarity of the results, making the overall conclusion about environmental quality more reliable.
Evaluating, what strengths did the re-photography have?
,
Evaluating, what limitations did the questionnaire have?
It was midday on a school day so students would still be at school, limiting the variety of people that could’ve been questioned
People might’ve said no or been busy so it won’t have been every 5th person
Evaluating, what limitations did the EQS have?
One person decided on the results, limiting accuracy
Some of the qualities being assessed have less questions than the other qualities so they’ll have a smaller total, reducing validity
Evaluating, what limitations did the re-photography have?
Only positive areas are shown, reducing the accuracy
Many areas that were photographed in the past were closed off in present times, limiting the accuracy
