Aesthetic Qualities
the application and manipulation of art elements and design principles to create a particular mood or to communicate ideas
Art Analysis
looking closely at an artwork in order to better understand how it was created and the meanings and messages it is trying to convey
Annotation
a written or visual addition made to information in a book (for example, a visual diary) used to demonstrate the thought processes that were involved in developing an idea
Art elements
the elements that play an important role in the success of an artwork (for example, line, colour, tone, shape, texture, form)
Art style
usually refers to historic style: often inclusive of subjects such as narrative, abstract or figurative
Brainstorming
a technique used to generate ideas on a topic or theme.
Chiaroscuro
the contrast of light and very dark.
Collage
a composition made up of a variety of materials, such as cardboard, string, paper cuttings and photographs, pasted together
Contrast
when two different forms of the elements are used in the same work specifically to emphasise the difference between them, for example use of light and shade or use of contrasting colours like blue and yellow
Cultural context
the influences of time, place, purpose, cultural and political setting on an artwork
Curator
a content specialist in a selected field, or a specific collection, in a Museum or Gallery. The curator selects the theme and artworks for an exhibition and writes the accompanying text.
Didactic Panel
information about the artwork provided for cataloguing and copyright purposes. The panel is found next to the artwork in an exhibition.

Graphite
a black mineral used in lead (graphite) pencils
Installation Pieces
artworks designed for gallery spaces or other environments for a specific period of time; these artworks are designed to be walked through or around so the viewer becomes immersed in the experience of the work

contrasting placement of elements to create visual pathways and create emphasis

Lux
the measurement of light

Monochromatic
having only one colour, without detail represented by differing hues and tints
Negative space
the space around and between subject/s of an image/artwork
Opaque
a solid colour that cannot be seen through
Positive space
the space used, or taken up, by the subject/s of an image/artwork
Preservation and Conservation
storing, displaying, handling and maintaining artworks in ways that promote long-term stability and impede deterioration
Subject matter
objects, ideas or themes portrayed in the creation of an artwork
Symbolism
representation of a concept through symbols or underlying meanings of objects or qualities
Public Gallery
The aim of a public gallery is to educate and/or inform the public along with schools and universities to collect and promote art.
Commercial Gallery
The aim of a commercial gallery is to make money through selling artworks. They do this by taking a commission of sold artworks and hiring out gallery spaces.
Artist Run Space
An artist run space is a space where emerging artists or performance artists showcase their work. This space is also staffed by the artists.
Curatorial Rationale
Text written by the curator that explains the theme and connecting ideas between artworks in an exhibition.
Surface Treatments
Wall colours and flooring chosen by the exhibition designer for an exhibition.
Alternative Art Space
A non traditional gallery space such as a cafe or laneway.
Virtual Art Space
An online space such as instagram or Bluethumb where artists can showcase and sell their artworks.
Conservator
a person responsible for the repair and preservation of works of art.
Exhibition Designer
Organising the gallery space and the layout and presentation of artworks within the exhibition space. This may include; putting together layouts & floor plans, creating a 3D scale model of the space, painting walls and printing information
panels for the walls. They work with curators to determine framing, mounting and general presentation of the artwork.
Art form
the "type" of art; sculpture, drawing, painting
Materials
What is used to create the artwork eg. Pencil, acrylic paint, poscas
Techniques
How the art material is used eg. Cross hatching with pencil, wet on wet with watercolours.
Visual Language
The communication of ideas through experiences, images and objects
Art Principles
The ways that the elements of art may be used in a work of art. The principles include balance, emphasis, harmony, variety, gradation, movement, rhythm, and proportion.
