Metal Processing
Processing of metals should be carried out carefully
Quenching and Hardening
Hardened by heating and cooling rapidly, produce very hard but brittle metal
Annealing
Softening process where metals are heated and then cool slowly
Tempering
heating a hardened metal and cooling slowly, produces a metal that’s hard and less brittle
Cold Working
strengthening of metal by changing its shape without use of heat
Casting
Melting and molding, molten is poured into a mold where the metal take shape used in jewelry
Expandable Mold Casting
mold must be destroyed to remove the metal
Permanent Mold Casting
made of ductile material and can be used repeatedly
Powder Processing
treats powdered metals with pressure and heat to form different shapes
Forming
raw metal is mechanically manipulated into a desired shape
Deformation
bending, rolling, forging, and drawing. this process includes metal forming and sheet metalworking
Bulk Processes
a type of deformation that is characterized by large deformations and shape changes. surface area is small and includes rolling, forging l, extrusion and wire and bar drawing
Sheet Metalworking
type of deformation that is performed on metal sheets, strips snd coils having a high surface area, use a punch and die to form the piece, bending drawing and shearing
Machining
any fabrication that removes a section of the metal, also known as material removal processing
Machining Operations
type of machining, a cutting operations using cutting tools that are harder than metal of the product
Abrasive Machining
machining, material is removed by abrasive particles that normally form a bonded wheel
Nontraditional Processes
machining, use lasers, electron beams, using a more modern process instead of traditional cutting and grinding tools
Joining
one of the last steps of the metal manufacturing process, includes welding, bolting and adhesives
Finishing
includes everything from galvanization to powder coating and can take place throughout the manufacturing process
