Indigenous Peoples
Native American tribes and communities that existed before European contact, each with unique cultures and systems.
Columbian Exchange
The widespread transfer of plants, animals, cultures, human populations, technology, diseases, and ideas between the Americas and the Old World following Columbus's voyages.
Brown v. Board of Education
The 1954 Supreme Court case that ruled that 'separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,' effectively ending legal segregation in public schools.
Manifest Destiny
The belief that it was the destiny of the United States to expand its territory across North America, promoting the idea of American cultural superiority.
Emancipation Proclamation
The 1863 declaration by President Lincoln that freed slaves in Confederate states, changing the war's focus to include the abolition of slavery.
Progressive Movement
A political and social movement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries that aimed to address issues of industrial capitalism, urbanization, and corruption in government.
New Deal
President Franklin D. Roosevelt's series of programs and reforms aimed at recovering from the Great Depression through relief for the unemployed, recovery for the economy, and reform of financial systems.
The Great Society
A set of domestic programs launched by President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960s aimed at eliminating poverty and racial injustice.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Landmark legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, marking a significant victory for the civil rights movement.
Korean War
The conflict between North and South Korea from 1950 to 1953, which resulted from the North's invasion of the South, and marked a significant instance of Cold War military conflict.
