What is the epuipment used to make soluble salts?

1.0 Molar dilute sulfuric acid, Copper (II) oxide powder, a spatula, a glass rod, a measuring cylinder, bunsen burner, tripod, gauze, heatproof mat, filter funnel and paper, a small conical flask, an evaporating basin, a crystallising dish, a beaker

What is the first step to make soluble salts?

Measure 20cm3 of sulfuric acid (the limiting reactant) into a measuring cylinder and pour it into a beaker.

What is the second step to make soluble salts?

Place beaker on top of bunsen burner and heat the acid gently until it is almost boiling.

What is the third step to make soluble salts?

Using a spatula, add small amounts of copper oxide in the acid.

What is the fourth step of making soluble salts?

Stir the solution with a glass rod and keep adding small amounts of copper oxide until no more reactions with copper oxide take place, meaning no more effervescence is produced. Stop adding copper oxide if power remains after stirring.

What is the fifth step of making soluble salts?

Use filtration to remove excess copper oxide, by using a filter paper, funnel and conical flask. Put filter paper on funnel and place funnel on conical flask to pour the solution, to get excess copper oxide.

What is the sixth step of making soluble salts?

Pour the solution into the evaporating basin.

What is the seventh step of making soluble salts?

Place the solution above a beaker full of boiling water and place the beaker above the bunsen burner. Heat until around half of the solution remains.

What is the eighth step of making soluble salts?

Leave the evaporating basin in a cool place for at least 24 hours.

What is the ninth step of making soluble salts?

Gently pat the crystals dry between two pieces of filter paper.

What are the safety precautions?

• Wear safety goggles as sulphuric acid is corrosive

• When the bunsen burner is not in use, turn it off or leave it on the orange safety flame
