Epithelial Tissue
Tightly packed cells that are avascular and regenerate quickly; functions include protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration.
Connective Tissue
The most abundant tissue type characterized by widely spaced cells and extracellular matrix that includes fibers and ground substance; functions in binding, support, transport, and protection.
Muscle Tissue
Tissue composed of elongated contractile fibers; includes skeletal (voluntary), cardiac (involuntary), and smooth (involuntary) types.
Nervous Tissue
Tissue consisting of neurons that send impulses, and glial cells that support them; functions in communication, integration, and control.
Apical Surface
The surface of epithelial tissue that is exposed to the lumen or outside environment.
Basal Surface
The surface of epithelial tissue that is attached to the basement membrane.
Collagen
The most abundant fiber in connective tissue, providing strength.
Elastin
A stretchy fiber in connective tissue that allows recoil.
Transitional Epithelium
A type of epithelium found in the urinary bladder that allows for stretching.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of stable internal conditions in the body despite external changes.
Negative Feedback
A control mechanism that counteracts changes to maintain a setpoint.
Positive Feedback
A process that amplifies a response until an endpoint is reached.
Granulation Tissue
Temporary connective tissue formed during the tissue repair process.
Hyperplasia
An increase in cell number.
Hypertrophy
An increase in cell size.
Atrophy
A decrease in cell size or number.
Neoplasia
Uncontrolled growth of cells, often resulting in a tumor.
Cutaneous Membrane
The skin; provides protection as a barrier to the external environment.
