Lycoming IO-360-L2A
A 4-cylinder, fuel-injected, horizontally opposed, air-cooled, normally aspirated, direct-drive engine rated at 180HP at 2700RPM.
LHAND Engine Acronym
A memory aid for engine design characteristics standing for Lycoming, Horizontally Opposed, Air Cooled, Normally Aspirated, and Direct Drive.
Electronic Ignition System (EIS)
A solid-state engine ignition system powered by battery electrical power, replacing or operating alongside conventional magnetos to enhance system reliability.
Cessna 172 S Oil Capacity Limits
An engine oil sump with a maximum capacity of 8quarts, requiring an ATP minimum quantity of 6.5quarts for departure.
Cessna 172 Propeller System
A McCauley 76inch, two-blade, all-metal, fixed-pitch propeller with a maximum operating limit of 2700RPM.
Shimmy Damper
A mechanical damping device on the nose landing gear designed to reduce nose wheel vibrations during high-speed ground operations.
Alternate Air Door
A spring-loaded door in the engine air box that automatically opens if the induction filter is blocked, drawing unfiltered air from inside the lower cowl with an approximate 10% power loss at full throttle.
Primary Flight Display (PFD)
The left screen of the Garmin G1000 avionics suite displaying primary flight instruments, including airspeed, altitude, attitude, vertical speed, and HSI navigation.
Multi Function Display (MFD)
The right screen of the Garmin G1000 avionics system displaying moving map graphics, traffic, weather, waypoint data, flight plans, and engine indication readings.
Air Data Computer (ADC)
A Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) that processes raw pitot pressure, static pressure, and outside air temperature (OAT) data to generate airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, and air temperature output.
Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS)
A Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) utilizing internal accelerometers, rate sensors, magnetometer inputs, and GPS data to compute pitch, roll, and heading.
ADAHRS
A single Line Replaceable Unit in Garmin G1000 NXi systems combining the functions of both the Air Data Computer (ADC) and Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS).
Reversionary Mode
An emergency operating mode in the Garmin G1000 that consolidates primary flight instruments and Engine Indication System (EIS) data onto a single display upon a screen failure.
Garmin GI 275
An electronic standby flight instrument installed on 2022+ Cessna 172 aircraft featuring an internal backup battery rated for a minimum run time of 60minutes.
VSO
Stall speed in landing configuration, equal to 40KIAS (indicated by the bottom of the white arc).
VS
Stall speed in clean configuration, equal to 48KIAS (indicated by the bottom of the green arc).
VX
Best angle of climb speed, equal to 62KIAS.
VY
Best rate of climb speed, equal to 74KIAS.
VA
Maneuvering speed, ranging from 90KIAS at 1900lbs up to 105KIAS at 2550lbs.
VR
Rotation speed, equal to 55KIAS.
VFE10∘
Maximum flap extension speed with 10∘ of flaps extended, equal to 110KIAS.
VFE20–30∘
Maximum flap extension speed with 20–30∘ of flaps extended, equal to 85KIAS (indicated by the top of the white arc).
VNO
Maximum structural cruising speed, equal to 129KIAS (indicated by the top of the green arc).
VNE
Never exceed speed, equal to 163KIAS (indicated by the red line).
VG
Best glide speed, equal to 68KIAS.
Stabilized Approach
An approach in which the pilot maintains a constant-angle glidepath towards a predetermined landing point at a target descent airspeed and configuration, fully established no lower than 200ft AGL.
Aiming Point
The predetermined location on the landing runway intersected by the aircraft's constant-angle visual glidepath.
Touchdown Point
The specific location on the runway surface where the aircraft main gear makes contact following the landing flare.
G-CASH
A mandatory final approach check mnemonic conducted at 300ft AGL verifying Glidepath, Configuration, Airspeed, Stabilized condition, and Heels on the floor.
Aerodynamic Braking
The technique of applying aft control stick or yoke pressure during landing rollout to increase elevator downforce, adding weight to the main gear and utilizing drag to decelerate before applying toe brakes.
Pivotal Altitude
The precise flight altitude at which an aircraft's lateral visual reference line appears to pivot on a ground pylon during eights-on-pylons, calculated by dividing groundspeed squared by 11.3.
Landing Assured
The operational state when an aircraft is lined up with the landing surface and will make touchdown on paved runway without requiring additional engine power.
Carburetor Heat
A pilot-controlled system on carbureted engines that introduces heated air into the induction system to prevent or eliminate carburetor ice formation.
