Water is the universal solvent because it dissolves most substances.

Solubility

The degree in which a substance dissolves in a solvent to make a solution

Capillary action

The movement of water within the spaces of a porous material due to the forces of cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension

(Remember flowers in class)

Surface tension

\-The property of a surface that allows it to resist an external force due to the cohesive nature of water molecules

\-a force which causes a layer to behave like an elastic sheet or skin

\-molecules at the surface form a stronger bond

Meniscus

A curve in the surface of a molecular substance (water) when it touches another material.
