Dorsal Body Cavity

Continuous cavity on the dorsal side of the body; split into cranial and vertebral cavities

Cranial Cavity

Contains the brain

Vertebral Cavity

Contains the spine, protected by bone (skull and vertebrae)

Ventral body Cavity

Thoracic and pleural cavities

Thoracic Cavitity

Superior to the diaphragm; divided to pleural and pericardial cavities

Pleural Cavity

Contains the lungs

Pericardial Cavity

Contains the heart, protected by the ribcage

Abdominopelvic Cavity

Inferior to the thoracic cavity and diaphragm, has no physical boundary separating it, divided into peritoneal, abdominal, and pelvic cavities

Peritoneal Cavity

A space between the two membranes (parietal and visceral serosa) that line the wall of the cavity and the organs

Pelvic Cavity

Contains the reproductive organs, bladder, and lower portion of digestive tract

Oral Cavity

Mouth

Nasal Cavity

Passage of the respiratory system posterior to the nose)

Orbital Cavity

Bony cavity holding the eye

Middle Ear Cavity

Houses bones utilized in hearing

Synovial Cavity

Joint cavities between bones

Abdominal Cavity

Contains the liver, stomach, intestines, gallbladder, spleen, etc.

Serosa (Serous Membrane)

A thin, double-walled membrane lining the walls of the ventral cavity and the surfaces of organs; secretes a thin lubricant to help reduce friction in the cavity as the organs move

Parietal Peritoneum

Lines the wall of the cavity

Visceral Peritoneum

Wraps around the surface of individual organs

Pleura

Membrane covering the lungs

Pericardium

Membrane covering the heart

Retroperitoneal

Organs posterior to the peritoneal cavity; including the kidneys, pancreas, ureters, adrenal glands, aorta, esophagus, rectum, and parts of the stomach and colon.

Epigastric region

Liver, stomach

Left Hypochondriac Region
