Nicholas I:

crushed the rebellion & became Europe’s most reactionary monarch.

Belgium (1830):

merged with Netherlands (1815)

upper class Belgians resisted due to cultural differences 

Inspired by the July Revolution in France, students & industrial workers revolted

Belgium won indep. in 1831 & adopts a liberal constitution

“Great Powers” declare Belgian neutrality in 1839 (important in WWI!)
