Main concept
We can graph inequalities on a number line to show which numbers are solutions
Inequality
Shows two amounts are not equal
Less than symbol
Greater than symbol
means bigger than
Less than or equal to symbol
≤ means smaller or equal
Greater than or equal to symbol
≥ means bigger or equal
Example 1
x > 3 open circle at 3 arrow to the right toward bigger numbers
Read as
X is greater than 3 any number bigger than 3 works
Open circle
Not included used for < or >
Example 2
x ≤ 6 closed circle at 6 arrow to the left toward smaller numbers
Read as
X is less than or equal to 6 any number smaller or equal works
Closed circle
Included used for ≤ or ≥
Quick memory tricks
Open circle means not part of solution Closed circle means part of solution Arrow shows direction of all solutions
