Atlas (C1)
The first cervical vertebra that lacks a body and is involved in the articulation with the occiput.
Dens of C2
The odontoid process of the second cervical vertebra which acts as a pivot for the rotation of the atlas.
Axis (C2)
The second cervical vertebra that provides a pivot point for the rotation of the atlas.
Bifid Spinous Process
A characteristic of certain cervical vertebrae (C2-C6) where the spinous process is split into two parts.
Cervical Pillar
Structure composed of superior and inferior articular facets that contributes to the stability of the cervical spine.
Anterior Longitudinal Ligament (ALL)
A ligament that runs along the front of the vertebral bodies providing stability to the spine.
Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (PLL)
A ligament that runs along the back of the vertebral bodies and joins with the tectorial membrane.
Nuchal ligament
A continuation of the supraspinous ligament that supports the neck muscles and attaches to C1-C7.
Transverse Ligament
A strong band that holds the dens in place, connecting the lateral masses of the atlas.
Brachial Plexus
A network of nerves formed by the anterior rami of lower cervical and first thoracic nerves supplying the upper limb.
Common Carotid Artery
An artery that supplies blood to the head and neck, dividing into external and internal carotid arteries.
Vertebral Artery
An artery that supplies blood to parts of the brain, brainstem, and upper spinal cord, passing through cervical vertebrae.
Contraindications for Palpation
Serious conditions indicating that treatment should not occur, often referred to as 'Red Flags'.
