Resilience
The process and ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, trauma, or significant stress.
Acute stress disorder
A mental health condition that can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, characterized by anxiety and dissociation.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
A mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, leading to persistent and distressing thoughts and feelings.
Ego dystonic
A term describing thoughts and feelings that are in conflict with a person's self-perception, causing distress.
Ego syntonic
A term describing thoughts and feelings that are consistent with a person's self-perception, often not recognized as problematic by the individual.
Allostasis
The process of achieving stability through change; the body’s ability to adapt to stressors over time.
Homeostasis
The state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by living systems.
Optimism
A general disposition to expect good outcomes; often associated with resilience.
Social support
The perception or reality that one is cared for, has assistance available from others, and is part of a supportive social network.
Reciprocal determinism
A principle that a person's behavior is influenced by personal factors, environmental factors, and the behavior itself, all interacting with one another.
Coping strategies
Methods a person uses to deal with stress and adversity, which can be either adaptive or maladaptive.
Temperament
The innate characteristics of an individual's personality, including emotional reactivity and self-regulation.
Resilience factors
Personal qualities and social resources that enhance an individual’s ability to cope with stress and bounce back from adversity.
Psychopathology
The study of psychological disorders and the development of mental illness.
Personality disorder
A type of mental disorder characterized by rigid and unhealthy patterns of thinking, functioning, and behaving.
Antisocial personality disorder
A personality disorder characterized by a disregard for other people's rights, impulsiveness, and a lack of empathy.
Borderline personality disorder
A personality disorder marked by instability in moods, behavior, self-image, and functioning.
Narcissistic personality disorder
A personality disorder characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and a need for excessive attention and admiration.
