A person’s societal position is based on a combination oF their class, status and party - Social class is now more fragmented similar to marx

Weber recognised economic factors as sources of conflict . However, his understanding of class was more gradient-based, rather than conforming to Marx’s two- class model of the Proletariat and the Bourgeoisie. Weber moved away from Marx’s essentially two class model; instead he defines class in terms of position in the economic marketplace . The market consists of many positions which vary according to source and amount of income, occupational skills and educational qualifications. An electrician for example, normally has greater skills than a casual labourer and so it is oversimplified to describe them both as ‘working class’.

In contrast to marx

explanations, Weber claimed that there had been the emergence of four different social class groups within capitalist societies. Weber’s approach allows for finely graded occupational classes, each based on their own “market position” . All the people within each class share broadly similar life chances . Weber defined social classes as clusters of occupations with similar life chances and patterns of mobility (people’s opportunities to move up or down the occupational ladder). On this basis, he identified four distinct classes: the properties upper class, the property less upperclass, the petty bourgeousie and manual workers, the working class

How does Weber’s explanation of a range of social groups, demonstrate HOW social class has become fragmented meaning inequality is experienced differently?

Weber suggests there are now a range of social class groups - Not

just the ruling and working classes. This means that inequality
