Metacognition
Awareness and regulation of one’s own thinking during learning (planning, monitoring, and evaluating understanding).
Mindset
Beliefs about whether abilities are fixed or can be developed (fixed vs. growth).
Growth mindset
Belief that abilities can be developed through effort, strategies, and persistence.
Retrieval practice
Actively recalling information from memory to strengthen learning and retention.
Spaced practice
Distributing study sessions over time to improve long-term retention.
Interleaving
Mixing different topics or problem types in one study session.
Dual coding
Using both verbal and visual representations to learn and remember.
Concrete examples
Using specific, tangible examples to illustrate abstract concepts.
Elaboration
Explaining ideas in detail and connecting them to prior knowledge.
Attention
A limited resource; focusing on relevant information, blocking out irrelevant information, and selective processing.
Selective attention
Focusing on specific information while ignoring other stimuli.
Broadbent's Filter theory of selective attention
A model where multiple stimuli are present but only one is selected to pass through a filter to a limited-capacity processing stage.
Inattentional blindness
Failure to notice something clearly in your visual field because attention was directed elsewhere.
Change blindness
Failure to detect changes in a scene when there is a disruption or distraction.
Growth mindset program (Blackwell, Trzesniewski, & Dweck, 2007)
An intervention combining study skills training with growth mindset messaging that can improve academic performance and prevent declines.
Infographic
A visual representation that conveys information quickly using graphics and layout.
Graphic organizer
A visual tool (charts, diagrams, diagrams, timelines) used to organize information.
Timeline
A graphic showing the sequence of events along a time axis.
Cartoon strip
A sequence of drawings used to explain concepts or tell a story.
