Magnet
Any material that attracts iron and materials that contain iron.
Magnetism
The attraction or repulsion of magnetic materials
Repel (Repulsion)
The force of like pulls pushing apart.
Attract (Attraction)
The force of opposite poles pulling together
Magnetic Poles
The ends of the magnet, where the magnetic force is the strongest
Magnetic Field
The area around a magnet where you can feel the magnetic force (push or pull)
Magnetic Field Lines
The individual markings that map out the invisible area of force around a magnet and sometimes show what direction they are moving. (north to south)
Model
A visual representation of something in science which you can't normally see in front of you.
Field Model
A visual representation of the invisible area around a magnet.
Compass
Device that can detect a magnetic field and points towards 'magnetic south' which is what we call the North Pole of the Earth.
Force
Any push or pull on an object.
Magnetic Force
The push or pull on an object caused by a magnet.
Ferromagnetic
A material that is strongly attracted to a magnet, and which can be made into a magnet.
Attract to a magnet
Repels from nothing
Will not attract to each other
Does not have its own magnetic field
Ferromagnetic materials
Attracts to AND repels from a magnet
Has its own magnetic field
Magnet materials
Does not attract or repel from things based on magnetism.
Does not have its own magnetic field
Non-magnetic materials
Strong Field Strength
At the poles
Close to the magnet
Holds more mass
Weak Field Strength
At the middle
Far away from the magnet
Holds less mass
Orientation
Whether or not you are looking at the North or South pole of a magnet.
