Epidermis- Thick skin 5 Layers
Stratum- corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, basale
Epidermis- Thin skin- 4 Layers
Usually hairy skin, all but palms and soles. Stratum- corneum, granulosum, spinosum, basale (no lucidum)
Epidermis
Superficial layer of epithelial tissue
Dermis
Deep layer of connective tissue
Subcutaneous tissue
Not part of skin, loose connective tissue that connects skin to underlying structures
What are the 5 types of cells in the epidermis?
Keratinocytes, Melanocytes, Langerhans(dendritic)cells, Merkel(tactile) cells, stem cells
Structures that are apart of the integument
Skin, hair, nails, glands
What are the functions of the integumentary system
Protection, sensation, tempature regulation, vitamin D production, excretion
Cyanosis
Blue color caused by decrease iin blood oxygen content
What are the two layers of the dermis
Papillary and Reticular
What are the types of sweat (sudoriferous) glands
Eccrine (merocrine), Apocrine, Modified apocrine glands- Ceruminous and mammary
Integumentary system
Consist of the skin and its accessory organs- hair, nails, cutaneous glands
What is the most vulnerable organ and why?
Skin- radiation, trauma, infection, injurious chemicals
Dermatology
Scientific study and medical treatment of the integumentary system

Name the different parts of the hair model

Which type of epithelial cell type is flattened and scale like
Squamous
What is an example of a cell that is part of the integumentary system’s defense against invading pathogens?
Langerhans cell
Shape of cells (Epithelium)
Squamous, Cuboidal, Columnar
Squamous
Flat, scale-like, like squashed

Cuboidal
About equal in height and width, like cube

Columnar
Taller than wide, like column

Number of cell layers (epithelium)
Simple, Stratified, Psudostratified
Hypodermis
Subcutaneous layer, deepest layer of the integumentary system
