Brown v. Board

1954 - The Supreme Court overruled Plessy v. Ferguson, declared that racially segregated facilities are inherently unequal and ordered all public schools desegregated.

Dred Scott v. Sanford

1857 Supreme Court decision that stated slaves were not citizens & therefore couldn't sue

Plessy v. Ferguson

a 1896 legalized segregation so long as the facilities for blacks and whites were equal. "Separate but Equal"

Loving v. Virginia

1867 court case that declared all laws against interracial marriage unconstitutional & violate 14th Amendment.

United States v. Nixon

1974 Supreme Court ruled Nixon couldn't claim executive privilege to hide criminal evidence. (president ordered covering of tapes for evidence)

Roe v. Wade

1973 legalized abortion

Texas v. Johnson

A 1989 case in which burning of the American flag was symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment.

Regents v. Bakke

1978 Race can be considered in admissions, but no racial quotas are allowed. (race can be considered, but no required amount)

Korematsu v. United States

A 1944 internment of Japanese Americans in encampments during World War II.

Miranda v. Arizona

1966 Supreme Court decision that sets guidelines for police questioning of accused persons to protect them against self-incrimination and to protect their right to counsel.

United States v. O'Brien

Burning draft cards to protest Vietnam War. Not protected by 1st Amendment - interferes with government's ability to conduct business.

West Virginia v. Barnette

Schools cannot require students to salute the flag or say pledge of allegiance

Johnson v. Poway Unified

Teachers can NOT display proselytizing messages.

Harper v. Poway Unified School District

Didn't violate a student's First Amendment rights when they punished him for wearing a T-shirt with anti-gay messages. The court's majority ruled that the school could limit the student's speech because it infringed on the rights of other students.

Adison Barnes v. Liberty High

shirt displaying "border just got 10 ft taller" was protected speech because politics & facts.

United States v. Wong Kim Ark

The Court ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment awarded citizenship to children of Chinese immigrants born on American soil.
