Principle of national self determanitaion
Every nation – or people - should have the right to determine its own future.” This includes
obtaining their own state if they want one.
Nation state
A state contating one large and relatively homogenous national group - Japan, REP Ireland and Germany
Multinational state
A state containing several distinct national groups - Canada, Afghanistan (No single dominant state)
Nation without a state
A large group of people who share a common identity but do not have a state of there own - Example Kurds who are spread across turkey etc and palestine’s who are in the west bank and Gaza
Multiple nations
Nations are spread over several states which for their part contain several nations central and eastern Europe
Self proclaimed states
Sovereignty not recognised by other states claimed on some notion of cultural, ethnic and national seperatiness like northen cyprus
Separatism
A national group (usually a minority) within a state wants to secede in order to form a state of its own
irredentism
One national group within a state wants to leave to join a neighbouring state which already exists or a state claims a group and terriority located in neighbouring state based on claims of cultural or ethnic affinity
Nationalist civil war
conflict between diffrent populations inside a state either over irredentism or separatism demands
International civil war
A cicil war that draws in one or more neighbouring countries
