V-E Day

May 8th, 1945, the day when WW2 officially ended in Europe.

Manhattan Project

A secret American project during WW2 to develop an atomic bomb; J. Robert Oppenheimer led the team of physicists at Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Potsdam Conference

The last meeting of the major Allied powers; the conference that took place outside Berlin from July 17th to August 2nd, 1945, at which the U.S. President Harry Truman, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, and British prime minister Clement Attlee finalized plans begun at Yalta.

Yalta Conference

The meeting of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin at a Crimean resort to discuss the postwar world on February 4th-11th, 1945; Joseph Stalin claimed large areas in eastern Europe for Soviet d o m i n a t i o n. (Yes I had to type it like that please don’t ask.)

Bretton Woods Conference

An international meeting held in the town of Bretton Woods, NEW HAMPSHIRE (WOOHOO!!), in 1944 in which participants agreed that the American dollar would replace the British pound as the most important international currency. The conference also created the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to promote rebuilding after WW2 and to ensure that countries did not devalue their currencies.

The United Nations

An organization of nations to maintain world peace, establish in 1945 and headquartered in New York.
