The management discipline that involves maximizing a business's resources to ensure they are utilized efficiently to meet customer needs, maintain product quality, and control service costs.
Business Process Redesign (BPR)
A radical optimization approach aimed at changing an entire business process to improve effectiveness and efficiency when existing processes are inefficient, overly labor-intensive, or have high error rates.
Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS)
An optimization approach designed to quickly adapt to changes in production needs using hardware and software components without requiring a complete systemic overhaul.
Six Sigma
A statistical optimization approach focused on eliminating flaws and reducing process defects to fewer than 3.4 defects per million opportunities.
DMAIC Process
The five-step methodology used in Six Sigma comprising Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.
Lean Manufacturing
A strategic methodology focused on eliminating non-value activities (waste) while enhancing productivity, guided by Kaizen and often integrated with ERP systems.
Waste
In Lean Manufacturing, any resource or non-value activity that does not add value to the product or service and for which customers are unwilling to pay.
Kaizen
A philosophy of continuous improvement that guides Lean Manufacturing.
Transformational Model
The core operational engine that converts operational inputs through transformation processes into final outputs, creating value and aligning outcomes with customer expectations.
Transformed Resources
Inputs that are directly altered, processed, or converted during operations to become final outputs, categorized into materials, information, and customers.
Transforming Resources
Inputs that facilitate and execute the transformation process, consisting of staff (employees and contracted personnel) and facilities (land, buildings, machinery, and equipment).
Transformation Process
The set of core activities that enhance the value of inputs by converting them into finished goods or services.
Undesirable By-Products
Unintended secondary outputs or waste, such as environmental or nuclear waste, produced during the transformation process.
Feedback Systems
Operational loops using internal sources (testing, evaluation) and external sources (suppliers, customers) to provide information that guides adjustments to inputs and transformation processes.
Front Office
The hospitality operations department responsible for managing reservations, guest check-ins and check-outs, room assignments, and providing guest support.
Housekeeping
The hospitality operations department responsible for maintaining cleanliness, organizing guest rooms, maintaining facilities, and ensuring compliance with health standards.
Food and Beverages (F&B)
The hospitality operational domain focused on planning, preparing, and delivering food and beverages while managing quality assurance and service cost control.
Sales and Marketing
The business sector responsible for promotions and customer acquisition, using Operations Management to track whether target revenue goals are met.
Environmental Analysis Tools
Analytical frameworks, specifically SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) and PEST Analysis (Political, Economic, Social, Technological), used in macro-level tourism operations management.
The Guest Journey
The application of the Transformational Model in hospitality where expectant guests (inputs) undergo optimized service execution (transformation) to result in a memorable experience and a returning customer (output).
