Český telekomunikační úřad (CTU)
The authority that performs management of the radio spectrum and grants individual authorizations for radio frequencies in the Czech Republic.
Radio waves
The medium through which signals are transmitted, broadcast, or received in a radiocommunications service.
Radio spectrum
Electromagnetic waves with a frequency lower than 3000GHz.
GMDSS
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (celosvětový námořní tísňový a bezpečnostní systém).
Priority of messages
The hierarchical order is: Distress message (DISTRESS), Urgency message (URGENCY), and Safety message (SAFETY).
Channel 16
The international VHF (VKV) distress, safety, and calling frequency in the maritime mobile service, corresponding to 156.8MHz.
VHF (VKV)
Very High Frequency band, which includes radio frequencies in the 160MHz range.
SRC Certificate Validity
Initially issued for 10 years; extensions are granted for 5 years upon request.
International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
A specialized agency of the United Nations for information and communication technologies.
RAINWAT
Regional Arrangement concerning the Radiotelephone Service on Inland Waterways, of which the Czech Republic is a member.
Inland AIS
Part of the river information services used on dedicated radio frequencies for automatic identification.
Maximum VHF ship station power
The maximum permitted power for a ship radio station transmitting in the VHF band is 25W.
Telecommunication Secrecy
The obligation of confidentiality for all persons who learn the content or existence of radio messages.
Sea Area A1
The area covered by at least one VHF coast station providing continuous DSC alerting.
RCC (Rescue Coordination Centre)
The body responsible for efficient organization of search and rescue services (SAR) and coordination of operations.
DSC (Digital Selective Calling)
A digital signaling system used for calling stations with the ability to select specific recipients.
Channel 70
The VHF channel reserved exclusively for DSC (Digital Selective Calling); voice traffic is prohibited on this channel.
MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity)
A nine-digit numerical code used to identify a ship station in DSC operations.
MID (Maritime Identification Digits)
The first three digits of an MMSI code that designate the country where the vessel is registered.
Czech Republic MID
The country identification code for the Czech Republic is 270.
EPIRB
Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon; the version for GMDSS operates at 406MHz and system COSPAS-SARSAT.
SART
Search and Rescue Transponder (9GHz) used for locating survivors at the scene of a disaster.
NON-SOLAS ships
Vessels not covered by the SOLAS convention, such as cargo ships under 300 tons or boats carrying fewer than 12 passengers.
PTT (Push-to-Talk)
A button on a radio station that, when pressed, enables the transmission of speech.
IMO
International Maritime Organization (Mezinárodní námořní organizace).
SOLAS
International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (Úmluva o bezpečnosti lidského života na moři).
CORRECTION
The standard expression used to fix a mistake made during a transmission.
SAY AGAIN
The standard expression used to request the repetition of a message or part of a message.
SEELONCE MAYDAY
The standard expression used by a controlling station to impose radio silence during a distress situation.
SEELONCE FINI
The standard expression used to signal the end of radio silence.
Simplex
A mode of operation that allows transmission on a single channel alternately in both directions but not simultaneously.
Duplex
A mode of operation that allows simultaneous two-way transmission using two different frequencies.
Lead-acid cell voltage
The nominal voltage of a lead-acid accumulator cell is 2V.
Alkaline cell voltage
The nominal voltage of an alkaline accumulator cell is 1.2V.
Dry cell voltage
The nominal voltage of a dry galvanic cell is 1.5V.
Radiation characteristic
The shape of the signal distribution; an omnidirectional antenna has a circular characteristic in the horizontal plane.
Frequency-Wavelength Relationship
The formula expressed as f=λc, where c is the speed of light.
Safe DC Voltage
In dry environments, direct current (DC) voltage up to 60V is considered safe for contact.
Safe AC Voltage
In dry environments, alternating current (AC) voltage up to 25V is considered safe for contact.
SQUELCH
A function on a VHF radio designed to suppress background noise and weak interference signals.
Ohm's Law
The relationship between voltage (U), current (I), and resistance (R) expressed as U=R×I.
Electrical Power Formula
The relationship defined as P=U×I.
EPIRB Battery Life
The minimum required battery life for an EPIRB while transmitting is 48 hours.
DUAL WATCH
A feature that allows the radio to monitor Channel 16 and one other selected channel simultaneously.
VHF Wave Propagation
Radio waves in the VHF band propagate in a straight line and do not bend along the Earth's surface.
