Why was the USA deemed isolationist 1865-1890?
They were focused on internally expanding due to being an unfinished nation
They wanted to avoid entanglements with Europe

A treaty signed with China in 1867 to promote free trade and movement between the two countries

Britain had to pay the USA compensation or give them Canada (which was now a dominion) due to Britain supplying the confederacy with ships in the Civil War

It argued that God had chosen them to populate the West as they had the ‘Divine Right’

This made Hawaii economically dependent on the USA and eventually resulting in them building a naval base in Pearl Harbour
