Electric current

Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge

2
New cards

Electromotive force

Electromotive force (e.m.f) of an electrical source is the work done by the source in driving a unit charge around a complete circuit

3
New cards

Potential difference

The potential difference (p.d.) across a component in a circuit is the work done per unit charge in driving charges through the component.

4
New cards

Resistance

The resistance of a component is the ratio of potential difference across it to the current flowing through it

New cards

Filament lamp

As electric current increases, more energy is transferred from the chemical potential store of the battery to the internal store of the filament. This in turn increases the resistance of the filament, which limiters the rate of current. The ratio of V to I shows the increase of filament resistance.

semiconductor diode

When a positive voltage is applied to the anode of a diode, a large current flows. In the reverse direction, when a positive voltage is applied to the cathode of a diode, the current is very low or almost zero. The resistance in the reverse direction is very high to almost zero.
