The design process
A way of breaking down a process into manageable chunks
Emergency Stop Sign
Cuts the power from the machinery in the workshop. If the fire bell rings, stop working in the workshop, put all tools on the benches and leave quietly out of the nearest fire exit.
Characterisation
The way an actor plays a role. This can be done through facial expressions, body language and voice.
Physical Theatre
A style of theatre that puts emphasis on movement rather than dialogue (speaking). It often used techniques such as movement, mime and dance.
Pace
how quickly or slowly your character speaks or moves
Body Language
The term used to describe the collective skills you use to communicate meaning about your character to the audience. This could include posture, gait and gesture.
Dramatic Pause
This can be taken before a line of dialogue or in the middle. This can communicate a range of different things to the audience.
Posture
How your character stands and the meaning communicated to the audience through this.
Gesture
A word to describe a movement from a body part to communicate meaning to the audience for example, a movement of your hands or head.
Analysis
Detailed examination of something
Impact
The effect or influence of something
Antagonist
The main foe of the protagonist
Implicit
Ideas suggested but not directly said
Atmosphere
The general tone or mood of a place.
Juxtaposition
Two things/ideas placed close together for a contrasting effect
Character Development
The changes a character experiences
Metaphors
A description that refers to one thing by mentioning another
Chronological
In order of time
Narrative Perspective
The way the story is told and by whom
Connotations
The ideas or feelings associated with something
Pathetic Fallacy
Assigning human feelings and emotions to aspects of nature
Conventions
A way in which something is usually done
Protagonist
The leading character in a novel, play, film, etc.
Emotive Language
Words chosen to evoke an emotional response
Red Herring
A misleading clue or piece of information
Empathy
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another
Similes
The comparison of one thing to another using “like” or “as”
Etymology
The study of the origin of words
Styles
A particular way in which something is done
Explicit
Clearly stated information
Suspense
A feeling of excitement or anxiety about what may happen
Exposition
A clear description of a character or setting
Symbolism
The use of something to represent or stand for something else
Foreshadowing
A warning of or hint to a future event
Tension
The feeling of feel, worry, or stress on the part of the reader
Imagery
Use of visually descriptive language
Tone
The general attitude or feeling of a piece
Geography
The study of places and the relationships between people and their environments.
Longitude
The angular distance of a place east or west of the Prime Meridian
Latitude
The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator

Place Value
The value a digit takes when placed in a particular position of a number.
Commutative
Calculations are commutative if changing the order does not change the result.
Associative
In these calculations you can re-group numbers and you will get the same answer
Fraction
A fraction is made up of a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom).
Improper fractions
The numerator is larger than the denominator.
Equivalence
Two fractions are equivalent if one is a multiple of the other.
Simplify
Cancel a fraction down to give the smallest numbers possible.
Mixed numbers
These are made up of a whole number and a fraction.
