Thyreophora
Definition of "shield bearers," a major group of Ornithischian dinosaurs characterized by one or more rows of osteoderms positioned above or beside the vertebral column.
Osteoderms
Bones embedded within the deep dermal layers of the skin, usually not directly attached to the skeleton, which often form protective armor.
Scutellosaurus
The most basal known thyreophoran from the Early Jurassic (approximately 196 million years ago) in Arizona, which was small, lightly built, and covered in numerous small osteoderms.
Scelidosaurus
An Early Jurassic thyreophoran from England that was the first dinosaur discovered as a mostly complete skeleton, allowing scientists to study entire anatomy.
David Sole Specimen
An exceptional specimen of Scelidosaurus discovered in 2000 that preserved hundreds of scutes in their original life positions.
Stegosaurs
Advanced branch of Thyreophora known as "plated lizards" that evolved vertical bony plates and spikes arranged in single or double rows along the neck, back, and tail.
Kentrosaurus
A Late Jurassic stegosaur from the Tendaguru Formation in Tanzania featuring paired rows of small plates that transition into long spikes at the hips and tail, as well as very large shoulder spikes.
Stegosaurus
A Late Jurassic dinosaur from the western United States with two rows of alternating large thin plates and two pairs of large tail spikes used as primary defensive weapons.
Thagomizer
An informal modern term sometimes used to describe the two pairs of large spikes at the tip of the Stegosaurus tail.
Ankylosauria
The sister group to Stegosauria within the clade Thyreophora, known as heavily armored "dino tanks" with broad bodies and specialized skulls.
Fused Vertebral Rod
An ankylosaur adaptation consisting of a rod of fused vertebrae along the back to increase rigidity and support heavy armor.
Nodosauridae
A major clade of ankylosaurs that lack tail clubs and rely on armor and spikes for passive defense.
Ankylosauridae
A major clade of ankylosaurs distinguished by the presence of a tail club used for active defense.
Tail Club Knob
The impact structure at the end of an ankylosaurid tail consisting of large fused osteoderms attached to the tail tip.
Edmontonia
A nodosaurid ankylosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta (approximately 75 million years old) that emphasized passive defense.
Euoplocephalus
A well-known ankylosaurid from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta (approximately 75 million years old) that possessed a large tail club.
Zuul crurivastator
An exceptionally preserved ankylosaurid species named in 2017 from Montana that includes skin impressions and soft tissue preservation.
Ankylosaurus
The largest known ankylosaurid, living 68−66 million years ago in the Hell Creek Formation, reaching a length of 6 to 8 meters and weighing approximately 6 tonnes.
Borealopelta
A nodosaurid dinosaur mummy from the Early Cretaceous of Alberta (approximately 115 million years old) that preserved original body shape, armor, and keratin structures.
Countershading
A coloration pattern found in Borealopelta which suggests that even heavily armored dinosaurs faced significant predation pressure.
Marginocephalia
A clade of "margin-headed dinosaurs" defined by a thickened bony shelf at the back of the skull, including Ceratopsians and Pachycephalosaurs.
Rostral Bone
A unique ceratopsian adaptation consisting of a specialized bone at the front of the upper jaw that forms part of the sharp beak.
Psittacosaurus
A primitive, primarily bipedal ceratopsian from the Early Cretaceous of Asia known as the "parrot lizard" due to its narrow beak.
Protoceratops
A Late Cretaceous neoceratopsian from Mongolia (75−70 million years ago) that showed evidence of sexual dimorphism in its broad frill but lacked large horns.
Leptoceratops
A small-bodied primitive North American neoceratopsian that lived until just before the end-Cretaceous extinction event (66.8−66.0 million years ago).
Dental Battery
An evolutionary novelty of Ceratopsidae consisting of hundreds of tightly packed teeth in columns, providing a highly efficient plant-processing system.
Centrosaurinae
A ceratopsid subfamily characterized by large nasal horns or thickened bosses and frequently elaborate frills with long spikes.
Chasmosaurinae
A ceratopsid subfamily characterized by prominent brow horns, long facial regions, and frills generally lacking long spikes.
Calli
The best preserved and most complete Triceratops discovered in Canada, dated to approximately 68 million years old.
Hell Creek Formation
A geological formation in western North America preserving the final two million years of the Late Cretaceous, including the final non-avian dinosaurs.
Ontogeny
The developmental changes an organism undergoes throughout its life, such as the dramatic transformation of the Triceratops skull from baby to adult.
Epoccipitals
Osteoderms located on the edge of the ceratopsian frill that become modified and remodeled during maturation.
Pachycephalosauria
Bipedal marginocephalians meaning "thick-headed lizards," defined by the extensive thickening of the bones in the skull roof.
Ontogomorph
A growth stage of a species that was mistakenly interpreted as a separate species by paleontologists.
Horner and Goodwin Hypothesis
The proposal that Dracorex, Stygimoloch, and Pachycephalosaurus represent the juvenile, subadult, and adult growth stages of a single species.
K/Pg Mass Extinction
A mass extinction event approximately 66.0 million years ago that ended the Mesozoic Era and resulted in the loss of approximately 75% of all species.
Alvarez Hypothesis
The 1980 proposal that a massive asteroid impact, approximately 10km in diameter, triggered the end-Cretaceous mass extinction.
Ejecta
Vaporized asteroid material and terrestrial rock blasted into the atmosphere during an impact, which can fall back to Earth as molten droplets.
Foraminifera
Commonly called "forams," these are single-celled marine organisms whose decline during the K/Pg event caused the collapse of ocean food webs.
K/Pg Boundary Clay
A thin layer found worldwide that provides strong geological evidence for the asteroid impact occurring at the exact boundary between the Cretaceous and Paleogene.
