Physician specializing in ionizing and nonionizing radiation for diagnosis and treatment.

General term for a professional working in radiologic/imaging sciences.
Computed tomography (CT)
X-ray imaging method that acquires multiple projections and reconstructs sectional images.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Imaging using a magnetic field and radiofrequencies rather than ionizing x-rays.
Diagnostic medical sonography
Imaging using sound waves.
Nuclear medicine technology
Use of radioactive substances for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Radiation therapy
Treatment of disease using ionizing radiation.
Bone densitometry
Measurement of bone density, commonly using DEXA/DXA.

Accreditation
Voluntary peer-review process recognizing an institution/program that meets specified criteria.
Certification
Voluntary recognition of an individual's specialized professional skills, usually demonstrated by examination.
Licensure
Governmental permission, usually granted by a state, to practice a profession.
Registry
List of individuals holding certification in a profession.
Joint Review Committee (JRC)
Group appointed by sponsoring organizations to oversee accreditation.
Sponsoring organization
Professional organization that appoints members to a JRC board.
Standards
Document specifying minimum requirements for accreditation of an educational program.
Essentials and Guidelines
Document specifying minimum quality standards for accreditation as approved by JRC sponsors.
Self-study
Comprehensive program document prepared during the accreditation process.
ARRT
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
ARDMS
American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
MDCB
Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
NMTCB
Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
Stress
Demand on time, energy, and resources with an element of threat.
Stressor
Real or imagined event that increases feelings of anxiety.
Fight-or-flight response
Physiologic response triggered by anger, fear, or a real or imagined threat.
Buffer
Activity that decreases the negative effects of stress without changing the stressor.
Hassle
Unexpected negative change or event.
Uplift
Planned positive activity used to balance hassles.
In-control language
Statements reflecting choice and evoking positive feelings.
Worry
Time and energy spent being concerned about matters with little or no personal control.
Mnemonic
Device used as an aid for remembering.
Massed study
Concentrated studying over a long period, such as cramming.
Spaced review
Short, regular periods of study and review over time.
Critical thinking
Professional reasoning and judgment based on knowledge and experience.
Problem solving
Methodic answering of questions to resolve a challenging situation.
Analysis
Careful examination of the components of a complex situation or problem.
Synthesis
Combining multiple areas of knowledge to create a new work or understanding.
Evaluation
Judgment or determination of the quality of a work or creation.
Critique
Feedback about the quality of a work or creation in the form of an opinion or review.
Case study
Real-life patient situation studied and assessed for learning.
Role playing
Acting out a situation realistically in the classroom or laboratory.
Portfolio
Collection and self-assessment of representative student work and accomplishments.
Reflection
Recording and personally reviewing current and past practices to improve future decisions.
Teamwork
Collaboration with others on the healthcare team to provide quality patient care.
