What does Bloch say (Bloch The principle of Hope)
Bloch believed that religion was an expression of ‘the principles of hope’- our dream of a better life that contain images of utopia (the perfect world)
Said images can sometimes mislead people- with a promise of a reward in heaven and argument similar to Marx himself.
Bloch also argued however that religion could help people to see what needs to be changed in the world, If combined with effective political organisation and leadership could bring about social change.
Bloch Analysis
Many differing views towards heaven/utopia- this could create conflict eg different religious texts and beliefs can vary. Subjective nature of heaven. Could link to fundamentalism strict views of utopia based on a literal, interpretation of religious texts. Creates an us vs them attitude.
Supporting application: Quakers attempt to do this- Creating the kingdom of heaven on earth. This is the guiding to philosophy of their faith.
Religion could end up reventing social change as groups may be excluded.
Gramsci- Dual Consciousness
Argued that people in society have a dual consciousness. Whilst they are partly influenced by the ruling class through education the media and religion and other institutions they are aware of their exploitation. eg. poor recognising their poor working conditions they live in. G believed that in order for a revolution to occur and a communist regime to emerge people were going to need to be guided by theoretical ideas like those in religions. working classes would need organic intellectuals help shape the working class consciousness the role of religious leaders could be reshaped (just like the liberation theology)
