-relief to moderate to severe pain
-sedation
What are some precautions to taking opiod analgesics ?
-meperidine is preferred for patients with pain from the gallbladder or bile ducts
-monitor for potentiation of effects when given with barbitutrates, benzodiazepines, phenothiazines, hypnotics, and sedatives
What are some side effects of opiod analegesics?
-orthostatic hypotension
-constipation
-urinary retention
-blurred vision
-respiratory depresssion
-abstinence syndrome
What are some nursing interventions for taking opiod analgesics ?
-monitor the patients vitals
-monitor for respiratory depression
-educate the patient regarding admin with PCA pump
-administer nalaxone for patients whp have respiratory depression
-prevent constipation
-monitor for urinary retention
