Size Constancy
The perceptual phenomenon where objects are perceived as having a constant size, regardless of their distance from the observer.
Visual Angle
The angle formed between two lines extending from the observer's eye to either end of an object, related to the perceived size of that object.
Proximal Stimulus
The size of the retinal image of an object as seen by the observer, which can differ due to distance.
Distal Stimulus
The actual size of an object in the environment.
Ames Room
An optical illusion that distorts the perception of size and shape, created by manipulating the geometry of the room.
Moon Illusion
The optical phenomenon where the moon appears larger when it is close to the horizon than when it is higher in the sky.
Ebbinghaus Illusion
A visual illusion where the perceived size of an object is influenced by the size of surrounding objects.
Emmert's Law
A principle stating that the perceived size of an afterimage increases with its perceived distance from the observer.
Angular-Size Contrast Theory
The theory suggesting that the perceived size of an object is affected by the relative size of surrounding objects.
Luminous Comparison Circle
A circle used in experiments to compare perceived sizes and distances by maintaining a constant visual angle.
