What two bones make up the leg (crural region)?
Tibia and fibula.

What joint is formed by the fibular articular facet?
Superior (proximal) tibiofibular joint.
What is the tibial tuberosity?
A rough projection just below the patella.

The patellar ligament.

The ridge commonly called the shin.
What is the medial malleolus?
The large projection on the distal medial tibia that forms the inner ankle.
Where can the medial malleolus be palpated?
On the medial side of the ankle.
What is the fibular notch?
A notch on the distal tibia where the fibula articulates.
What joint is formed by the fibular notch?
Inferior (distal) tibiofibular joint.
What bone articulates with the inferior articular surface of the tibia?
Talus.
What is the fibula?
A long, thin, lateral bone of the leg.
Does the fibula bear weight?
No.
Why is the fibula commonly used for bone grafts?
Because it does not bear weight.
What is found at the proximal end of the fibula?
Head of the fibula.
What articulates with the head of the fibula?
The tibia.
What lies just below the head of the fibula?
Neck of the fibula.
What is the lateral malleolus?
The distal projection of the fibula that forms the outer ankle.
What is the function of the lateral malleolus?
Provides lateral stability to the ankle joint.
Where can the lateral malleolus be palpated?
On the lateral side of the ankle.
What is a Pott fracture?
A fracture involving the distal tibia and often the fibula at the malleoli.
What commonly causes a Pott fracture?
Forced inversion (rolling or twisting) of the ankle.
Which ligament is commonly damaged in a Pott fracture?
Deltoid ligament.
What are common symptoms of a Pott fracture?
Pain, swelling, and bruising of the ankle.
What determines treatment for a Pott fracture?
The severity of the fracture and whether the bones are displaced.
Which bones form the ankle and proximal foot?
Tarsal bones.
How many tarsal bones are in one foot?
Seven.
Why are the tarsal bones more integrated than the carpal bones?
Because they help the ankle bear the body's weight.
