Stages of Illness Behavior
Stage 1: Symptom Experience
Stage 2: Assumption of sick role
Stage 3: Medical Care Contact

Stage 1: Symptom Experience
- feel some physical changes or limitations;
- perceive some signs and symptoms; and
- emotional response
Stage 2: Assumption of Sick Role
- excuse from normal duties and routine; and
- seek confirmation from parents and friends.
Stage 3: Medical Care Contact
- seek medical professional help/consultation to a doctor; and
- taking prescribed medication (if symptoms persist after taking medication please call or visit your physician).
Stage 4: Dependent Client Care
- rely on health giver for restoration of one's health;
- adjust to the change of daily action/ADLs; and
- relieving symptoms.
Stage 5: Recovery and Rehabilitation
- feeling fine or okay and confront the illness (maybe gone suddenly/adjustment;
- gradual/sudden recovery or prolonged rehabilitation stage (chronic illness may last to 6 months or more); and
- process of healing

Physical Dimension
age, sex, race (genetic make-up), health status of a person.
- ex. Toddler just learning to walk is prone to fall and injure himself/herself.
- Young woman with family history of Breast CA is at a higher risk of developing the condition.
Emotional Dimension
- how mind and body would interact, affect the body function and response to body conditions that would influence health.
- ex. Prior to an examination, a student always has diarrhea.
Intellectual Dimension
- cognitive abilities and educational background; past experiences.
- ex. An elderly woman who has only a 3rd grade education needs teaching about a complicated diagnostic test.
Environmental Dimension
- personal hygiene, sanitation, housing and climate.
- ex. Increased incidence of asthma and respiratory problems in large cities because of smog.
Socio-cultural
- health practices and belief which influences your lifestyle; culture of the family.
- ex. Low income family
Spiritual Dimension
- refers to the beliefs and as well as the values that are important components on how the person responds to health and illness.
- ex. Jehovah's Witness is opposed to blood transfusion.
Community Health Nursing
the synthesis of nursing practice and public health practice applied to promoting and preserving the health of populations (American Nurses Association)
Public Health Nursing
May be defined as a field of professional practice in nursing and in public health in which technical nursing, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills are applied to problems of health as they affect the community (Freeman)
Community-Based Nursing
Refers to the application of the nursing process in caring for individuals, families, and groups where they live, work, or go to school or they move through the healthcare system (McEwen and Pullis).

1. SURVEILLANCE describes and monitors health events.
2. DISEASE AND OTHER HEALTH EVENT INVESTIGATION systematically gathers and analyzes data.
3. OUTREACH locates population of interest and at risk and provides information.
4. SCREENING identifies individuals.
5. CASE FINDING locates individuals and families.

6. REFERRAL AND FOLLOW UP assists to identify and access resources.
7. CASE MANAGEMENT optimizes self-care management.
8. DELEGATED FUNCTIONS are direct care tasks.

10. COUNSELING establishes an interpersonal relationship.
