Expression
A mathematical phrase that contains numbers, variables, and operators but does not contain an equality sign.
Equation
A mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions using an equals sign (=).
Inequality
A mathematical relationship that compares two expressions using symbols such as <, >, =, or=.
Product
The result of multiplying two or more numbers or expressions together.
Sum
The total result of adding two or more numbers or quantities.
Quotient
The result obtained from the division of one number or expression by another.
Exponent/Power
A number that indicates how many times a base is multiplied by itself, typically written as a superscript in the form an.
Evaluate
To find the numerical value of a mathematical expression after substituting specific values for its variables.
Substitute
The act of replacing a variable in an expression or equation with a specific number or another expression.
Variable
A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown value or a value that can change within a mathematical context.
Constant
A fixed numerical value in an expression or equation that does not change.
Linear
An algebraic relationship or equation whose graph is a straight line and where the highest power of the variable is 1.
Distributive property
A mathematical property used to multiply a single term by two or more terms inside a set of parentheses, expressed as a(b+c)=ab+ac.
Inverse operations
Pairs of mathematical operations that undo each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.
Isolate
The process of using algebraic operations to move a specific variable to one side of an equation by itself.
Like terms
Terms that contain the same variables raised to the exact same powers.
Common denominator
A shared multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions, required for addition and subtraction.
Square root
A value that, when multiplied by itself, produces a specific number, represented by the symbol \root.
Factors
Numbers or algebraic expressions that are multiplied together to produce a given product.
