Academic Integrity
Policy stating that academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in the laboratory (cheating, copying, or plagiarism); may involve penalties such as grade reductions or dismissal; includes the Academic Integrity Pledge.
Academic Integrity Pledge
A commitment to live with integrity in all areas of life, including the classroom; violations can lead to disciplinary actions.
Lab Quiz
A short pre-lab quiz worth 15 points for each experiment, used to assess preparation; late attendance can prevent make-ups.
Lab Report
An independently prepared document for a lab that is worth 85 lab points plus any associated quiz points, totaling 100 points per experiment when combined with the 15-point quiz.
Lab Points
Total points earned from all lab activities (nine labs x 100 points each = 900 lab points).
Warm-Body Credit (WBC)
20 points awarded for completing the lab and handing it in on time.
Dry Labs
Labs conducted online (Canvas) not performed in the physical lab; can be worth up to 100 points and may not include WBC or a quiz.
Nine Labs
The semester comprises nine labs (wet labs and homework-style labs) totaling 900 lab points.
Data Set
A data set provided for make-up labs; labeled “Data Set” on the data sheet; may be used to complete the lab when a regular session is missed; quiz points adjusted by applying the report average to 15 points.
Makeup Lab
Make-up sessions allowed when a scheduled lab is missed; attend another section’s lab during the same week if space permits and with instructor permission.
Distilled Water
Water source used for cleaning; bottles are labeled and refilled from a verified source; used sparingly as part of lab cleaning.
LabQuest
Vernier standalone data-collection interface used to gather sensor data; saves data on the unit and then to USB; not all data can be copied in one step.
LabQuest USB Storage
Saved data must be saved to a USB drive; LabQuest stores only the currently displayed data unless opened first.
Excel
Graphing and data analysis software used for lab data; replaces the older Logger Pro for graphing.
Logger Pro
Vernier graphing software that is no longer supported in this course; replaced by Excel for graphing.
Safety Agreement
A Chemistry Laboratory Safety Agreement that must be signed at the first lab meeting, outlining required safety practices.
Splash-Proof Goggles
Eye protection required to be worn continuously during all lab periods.
Lab Attire
Appropriate clothing is required; shorts, sandals, open-toed shoes, or exposed skin are not allowed in the lab.
Fume Hood Safety
Treat the inside of the fume hood as potentially hazardous; keep your head outside the hood plane to avoid exposure.
Data Sheets
Data sheets are entered on the lab’s data sheets first; include the original data sheet; name on top; calculations and graphs follow; no white-out.
Graphs Requirements
Graphs must be computer-generated (not hand-drawn unless specified); landscape orientation; one good-sized graph per page; descriptive titles and labeled axes with units; proper scaling.
Post-Lab Questions
Questions accompanying the lab worth part of the 65 points allocated for each experiment; typically 20–30 points.
Waste Disposal
Use labeled waste containers; glass waste goes into a cardboard container; some wastes require special disposal procedures; do not pour hazardous materials down drains.
Section 08
Friday lab section; may meet in a different room (often with more room) and has a distinct schedule from other sections.
Section Assignments (CHEM1110 sections)
Individual section times and instructors (e.g., CHEM1110-01 Monday 2 PM Schumacher, CHEM1110-02 Tue 11 AM McClain, etc.).
Data and Calculations in Reports
All calculations must be shown; representative calculations may be attached; ensure data tables and graphs accompany the report.
Format Requirements for Lab Reports
Data Sheets go on top with name; calculations, post-lab questions, and graphs follow; pages must be in page-number order; no handwritten data sheets.
Penalties for Late Labs
Late lab reports incur point penalties (5 points within the due week; up to 10 points after); sometimes no credit after extensive progression of grading.
Attendance and Makeup Policy
Missed labs may be made up in another section if permitted by space and instructor approval; inform instructor of missed labs.
Tape and Binding Rules
All report pages must be stapled in the upper left corner; ragged edges (“confetti edges”) are penalized.
Data Integrity
Always show all calculational work and clearly indicate any discarded data with a single strike; do not use white-out on the lab report.
Safety Emphasis
Following safety rules is essential; failure can result in grade penalties or expulsion from the lab.
