Impressionism
Developed in France in the late 1800’s, it is a practice of painting out of doors rather than in a studio from sketches. Impressionist paintings are usually painted with dabs or strokes of unmixed colors with a focus on capturing light reflected off the subject or landscape.
Horizon Line
Where the earth meets the sky. In a landscape painting, the horizon line is not always in the middle. It could be near the top or near the bottom of the compositio
Foreground
The object, subject or area of the picture space that appears nearest (closest) to the viewer.
Background
The space that surrounds your painting. The area that appears to be furthest away.
Composition
an ordered relationship among the parts or elements of an artwork. In drawing, the arrangement of forms and spaces within the format. One compositional style is called Dynamic. Another is: Foreground, Middle Ground, Background.
Value
The darkness or lightness of tones or colors.
Space
Can be shallow or deep. Objects farther away should appear smoother in texture and lighter in color (caused by water molecules in the atmosphere).
Hatching
A set of parallel lines, preferably fine lines (hence the pencil) drawn closely together.
Cross-hatching
a series of intersecting sets of parallel lines used to indicate shading or volume in a drawing. Cross-hatching is the next step after hatching, drawing a second set of lines at an angle (most often at right angles to the first set).
Feathering
a form of hatching using short, soft strokes.
Blending
the technique of gently intermingling two or more colors or values to create a gradual transition or to soften lines.
