What is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)?
A mood disorder characterized by a period of at least two weeks where a person experiences a depressed mood and/or anhedonia, plus at least four other symptoms.
What is Anhedonia?
The inability to experience pleasure from activities that are usually enjoyable, such as hobbies, food, social interaction, or sex.
Describe Psychomotor retardation.
A visible slowing of thought and physical movements, such as slow speech, delayed response time, and decreased body movement.
What is Insomnia?
Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or sleeping less than desired, which can be a symptom of depression.
What is Hypersomnia?
Excessive sleepiness or sleeping for abnormally long periods, which can also be a symptom of depression.
Define Bipolar Disorder.
A mood disorder characterized by alternating periods of depressive episodes and manic (or hypomanic) episodes.
What is Mania?
A state of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and increased goal-directed activity or energy, lasting at least one week.
What are some symptoms of Mania?
Inflated self-esteem, reduced need for sleep, rapid speech, and impulsive behavior.
