Coronal (Frontal) Plane

Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.

Transverse (Horizontal) Plane

Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.

Midsagittal (Median) Plane

Vertically divides the body into equal right and left halves.

Sagittal Plane

Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left portions, not necessarily equal.

Oblique Plane

Plane that passes through the body or an organ at an angle.

Anterior

Toward the front of the body.

Posterior

Toward the back of the body.

Dorsal

Toward the back side of the body.

Ventral

Toward the belly side of the body.

Superior (Cranial)

Toward the head or upper region of the body.

Inferior (Caudal)

Toward the feet or lower region of the body.

Cranial

At the head end.

Caudal

At the rear or tail end.

Rostral

Toward the nose or mouth.

Medial

Toward the midline of the body.

Lateral

Away from the midline of the body.

Ipsilateral

On the same side of the body.

Contralateral

On the opposite side of the body.

On the inside; away from the body surface.

Superficial

On or near the body surface.

Closest to the point of attachment to the trunk.

Distal

Farthest from the point of attachment to the trunk.
