Iliocostalis proximal attachment (origin)
Arises by a broad tendon from posterior part of iliac crest, posterior surface of sacrum, sacroiliac ligaments, sacral and inferior lumbar spinous processes, and supraspinous ligament
Iliocostalis distal attachment
Lumborum, thoracis, cervicis; fibers run superiorly to angles of lower ribs and cervical transverse processes
Iliocostalis action
Bilateral - extend the vertebral column and head; as back is flexed, control movement via eccentric contraction Unilateral - laterally flex vertebral column to the same side
Iliocostalis innervation
Posterior rami of spinal nerves
Longissimus proximal attachment (origin)
Arises by a broad tendon from posterior part of iliac crest, posterior surface of sacrum, sacroiliac ligaments, sacral and inferior lumbar spinous processes, and supraspinous ligament
Longissimus distal attachment
Thoracis, cervicis, capitis; fibers run superiorly to ribs between tubercles and angles to transverse processes in thoracic and cervical regions, and to mastoid process of temporal bone
Longissimus action
Bilateral - extend the vertebral column and head; as back is flexed, control movement via eccentric contraction Unilateral - laterally flex vertebral column to the same side
Longissimus innervation
Posterior rami of spinal nerves
Spinalis proximal attachment (origin)
Arises by a broad tendon from posterior part of iliac crest, posterior surface of sacrum, sacroiliac ligaments, sacral and inferior lumbar spinous processes, and supraspinous ligament
Spinalis distal attachment
Thoracis, cervicis, capitis; fibers run superiorly to spinous processes in the upper thoracic region and to cranium
Spinalis action
Bilateral - extend the vertebral column and head; as back is flexed, control movement via eccentric contraction Unilateral - laterally flex vertebral column to the same side
Spinalis innervation
Posterior rami of spinal nerves
Semispinalis proximal attachment (origin)
Transverse processes of C4-T12 vertebrae
Semispinalis distal attachment
Between the superior and inferior nuchal lines on the occipital bone, Spinous processes of C2- T6 vertebrae
Semispinalis action
Extends head, thoracic, and cervical regions of vertebral column, rotates them contralaterally
Semispinalis innervation
Segmentally innervated by dorsal primary rami of spinal nn.
Multifidus proximal attachment (origin)
Aponeurosis of the erector spinae muscles, sacrum and transverse processes of lumbar, thoracic and cervical vertebrae
Multifidus distal attachment
Spinous processes of lumbar, thoracic, and lower cervical vertebrae, spans 2-4 levels
Multifidus action
Extend the vertebral column and rotates the vertebral column contralaterally Multifidus has a lumbar stabilization component
Multifidus innervation
Segmentally innervated by dorsal primary rami of spinal nn.
Rotatores (longus, brevis) proximal attachment (origin)
Transverse processes of C2 vertebra to the sacrum
Rotatores (longus, brevis) distal attachment
Near lamina immediately above vertebra of origin
Rotatores (longus, brevis) action
Extend the vertebral column and rotates the vertebral column contralaterally.
Rotatores (longus, brevis) innervation
Segmentally innervated by dorsal primary rami of spinal nn.

Levatores costarum proximal attachment (origin)
Transverse process above
Levatores costarum distal attachment
Pass inferolaterally and insert on a rib
Levatores costarum action
Elevate ribs
Levatores costarum innervation
Dorsal rami of C8-T11 spinal nn.
