Environment
Everything that surrounds us and affects our existence, encompassing living organisms, non-living elements, and the systems they create together.
Biotic Components
The living organisms within an ecosystem (such as plants, animals, and bacteria) that interact with non-living factors to survive, form food webs, and maintain ecological balance.
Abiotic Components
The non-living elements of an environment (such as sunlight, temperature, water, air, and soil) that determine habitat suitability, species survival, and overall ecosystem productivity.
Lithosphere
Earth's solid outer layer, composed of land, rocks, mountains, and soil, which provides essential minerals and acts as the foundation for terrestrial ecosystems.
Hydrosphere
All water present on Earth in various cycling forms, including oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater, and ice, which regulates global climate and sustains aquatic life.
Atmosphere
The multi-layered blanket of gases surrounding Earth (ranging from the troposphere to the exosphere) that protects life from radiation and regulates weather and climate.
Biosphere
The life-supporting zone of Earth composed of air, land, fresh water, and salt water where the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interact; it represents the highest level of ecological organization.
Intrinsic Value
The value an environmental entity possesses in and of itself, as an end rather than a means, asserting that nature has a inherent right to exist for its own sake.
Instrumental Value
The conditional value assigned to an environmental entity based on its usefulness as a tool, resource, or means to achieve a desired human end.
Anthropocentrism
A human-centered ethical viewpoint asserting that humans are the central and most important entities in the universe, holding intrinsic value while nature exists only as a resource for human use.
Biocentrism
A life-centered ethical perspective that grants intrinsic value and moral standing to all individual living organisms.
Ecocentrism
An ecosystem-centered ethical stance that attributes intrinsic value to entire ecological systems, biotic communities, and ecological processes rather than focusing solely on individual organisms.
Ecology
The scientific study of relationships and interactions between living organisms and their physical environments, focusing primarily on energy transfer.
Organism
Any individual unicellular or multicellular living entity that exhibits all characteristics of life; it forms the lowest level of ecological organization.
Population
A group of organisms belonging to the same species living in a specific area at the same time, capable of interbreeding and competing for shared resources.
Community
An assemblage of multiple interdependent populations of different species inhabiting a common environment and interacting with one another.
Ecosystem
A structural and functional unit consisting of a biological community of interacting populations together with their surrounding non-living abiotic factors.
Habitat
The physical place or biological address where an organism lives out its life.
Ecological Niche
The specific functional role or profession a species performs within its community, determined by its behavior, resource utilization, and tolerance limits.
Limiting Factor
Any environmental condition, whether biotic or abiotic (such as water availability, food supply, or temperature), that restricts the survival, growth, or distribution of organisms in a given area.
Epiphyte
A plant (also known as an aerophyte or air plant), such as a tropical orchid or bromeliad, that grows attached to another plant for structural support without drawing nutrients from it.
Symbiosis
A close biological relationship where two distinct species live together in physical proximity.
Commensalism
A symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits while the other species is neither helped nor harmed.
Parasitism
A symbiotic relationship in which one organism (the parasite) lives on or in another organism (the host), deriving benefits while harming the host.
Mutualism
A symbiotic interaction in which both participating species derive biological benefits from the relationship.
Food Chain
A linear model illustrating a single pathway through which matter and energy move across trophic levels in an ecosystem.
Food Web
A complex network of interconnected food chains representing all possible feeding relationships and energy transfer pathways across trophic levels within a community.
Photoautotrophs
Primary producers (such as plants, algae, and cyanobacteria) that synthesize organic food molecules from inorganic carbon dioxide and water using light energy, expressed by the chemical equation 6CO2+6H2O+Light Energy→C6H12O6+6O2.
Chemoautotrophs
Primary producers (including certain archaea) that manufacture organic food compounds using energy derived from inorganic chemicals like H2S, NH3, CH4, or Fe2+.
10% Rule of Energy Transfer
The ecological concept stating that only approximately 10% of total energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next, while the remaining energy is lost as heat, used for metabolic processes, or contained in indigestible material.
Humus
Nutrient-enriched soil created when decomposers (fungi and bacteria) and detritivores (such as isopods) break down and fragment dead organic matter.
Biological Diversity
A phrase coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1986 to describe the variety of life on Earth across genetic, species, and ecosystem levels.
Edward O. Wilson
The renowned biologist recognized as the "Father of Biodiversity" who popularized the concept of biological diversity.
Genetic Diversity
The variation in genetic composition and individual genes within a single species, which provides the adaptive capacity needed to survive changing environments.
Species Diversity
The variety and relative abundance of different biological species present within a given geographical area.
Ecosystem Diversity
The structural variety of habitats, biological communities, and ecological processes present across a specific region.
Evolution
The process of gradual structural and genetic change in living organisms across successive generations, driven by the inheritance of beneficial traits that enhance survival and reproduction.
Comparative Anatomy
The study of anatomical similarities among organisms (such as the structural alignment between a human arm and a whale flipper) that provide evidence of descent from a common ancestor.
Natural Selection
The evolutionary mechanism formulated by Charles Darwin in which environmental pressures favor individuals with beneficial traits, allowing them to survive, compete successfully, and reproduce.
Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characters
The evolutionary theory proposed by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in 1809 asserting that organs develop or atrophy based on use and disuse during an organism's lifetime, and that these acquired traits are passed down to offspring.
Common Ancestor
An ancestral organism or shared gene pool from which two or more distinct descendant species or lineages have evolved over time.
Adaptive Radiation
The evolutionary process wherein a single ancestral lineage rapidly branches out into multiple distinct species, each adapted to exploit specific ecological niches (as seen in Darwin's finches).
Human-Caused Extinction
The rapid loss of species driven by human activities, occurring at an accelerated rate approximately 100 to 1000 times faster than natural background extinction.
Habitat Fragmentation
The division of large, continuous natural habitats into smaller, isolated patches, leading to a decrease in interior habitat and interior species alongside an increase in edge habitat and edge species.
Biotic Pollution
The intentional or accidental introduction of a non-native foreign species into an ecosystem where it disrupts native communities and vegetation.
Genetic Pollution
The alteration or dilution of a native species' gene pool resulting from hybridization with introduced exotic species.
In-situ Conservation
The strategy of protecting and conserving wild species within their natural habitats and original ecosystems.
Ex-situ Conservation
The strategy of protecting endangered species outside of their natural habitats using artificial environments such as captive breeding facilities, zoos, or gene banks.
