Epstein Pearls
Small, white cysts located on the palate in infants and children that are benign and usually go away on their own.
Ankyloglossia
A benign oral condition in infants and children commonly referred to as tongue tie.
Sinus Infection
A condition assumed during a nose assessment when a patient presents with prolonged purulent drainage.
Cheilitis
Inflammation of the lips.
Glossitis
Inflammation of the tongue.
Leukoplakia
White patches in the mouth that are not easily scraped away; associated with tobacco and alcohol use and considered pre-cancerous.
General Survey
An initial physical assessment component covering physical appearance, body structure, mobility, and behavior, which can be affected by cultural norms.
Marfan's Syndrome
A genetic connective tissue disorder impacting the cardiovascular, skeletal, and ocular systems; characterized by a tall and thin stature, chest sticking outward or sinking inward, scoliosis, loose hypermobile joints, and a narrow, arched palate with crowded teeth.
Lordosis
A normal developmental variation in infants and young children where the lower back curves and pushes the abdomen outward due to weaker core and abdominal muscles.
Waist Circumference Risk Thresholds
Measurements of >35 inches in women and ≥40 inches in men that, when combined with a BMI of 25–35, indicate an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, HTN, and CV diseases.
Kyphosis
Posture changes in aging adults involving forward flexion, related to osteoporosis or loss of muscle mass and strength.
Febrile / Hyperthermia
A regulated body temperature reading exceeding 37.8∘C (100.04∘F).
Hypothermia
A regulated body temperature reading below 36∘C (96.8∘F).
Bradycardia
A pulse rate of less than 50 beats per minute.
Tachycardia
A pulse rate of greater than 100 beats per minute.
Pulse Force Scale
A clinical rating scale for pulse amplitude where 3+ is bounding, 2+ is normal, 1+ is weak/thready, and 0 is absent.
