What is an allegory?

A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning.

What types of meanings are typically revealed in an allegory?

Moral or political meanings.

What is alliteration?

The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Give an example of alliteration.

Allusion

A reference to another work of literature, person, or event. (aaron warner alludes to hogwarts)

What is Anadiplosis?

A figure of repetition at the end of a claus.

What occurs in Anadiplosis?

The last word or terms in one sentence, are repeated at or very near the beginning of the next sentence, clause, or phrase.

(fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering).

Ambiguity

An event or situation that may be interpreted in more than one way.

Analogy

A comparison of two different things that are similar in some way ( Up is to down as in is to out.)

Anaphora

Repeats a word or phrase at the beginning of successive sentences, lines, or clauses.

Example: "I have a dream to be free, I have a dream to be successful, I have a dream to be rich"

Antagoge

placing a good point or benefit next to a fault criticism, or problem in order to reduce the impact or significance of the negative point

"the shirt looks very high quaility and fits _ well, although the color washes _ out and is probably overpriced"

A brief, cleverly worded statement that makes a wise observation about life.

Expression of doubt (often feigned) by which a speaker appears uncertain as to what he should think, say, or do.

Apostrophe

A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction, such as liberty or love.

A word or phrase that renames a nearby noun or pronoun.

A word or phrase (including slang) used in everyday conversation and informal writing but that is often inappropriate in formal writing (y'all, ain't)
