Urinary Catheterization
The introduction of a catheter through the urethra into the bladder for the purpose of withdrawing urine.
Intermittent Straight Catheters
Used to drain the bladder for shorter periods of time (5-10 minutes).
Indwelling Catheter
Designed to stay in the bladder for longer periods, usually with an inflated balloon to prevent slipping out.
Indications for Urethral Catheterization
Includes relieving discomfort of a distended bladder, obtaining a sterile urine specimen, assessing residual urine, and managing patients with long-term conditions.
Coudé Catheter
A specialized catheter used in men with prostate problems; it has a curved end to help bypass the prostate gland.

The size of urinary catheters is measured on the French scale; most adults use 14 to 16 French.
Three-way Catheter
Catheter used for continuous bladder irrigation or medication instillation; has three lumens for different functions.
Continuous Bladder Irrigation
A method of irrigating the bladder continually using a catheter and sterile solution.

May experience burning; maintain intake and output (I&O) and notify the nurse of first void.
