Parameter
The whole population; all the students in a classroom
Statistic
A group from the population; asking a question to a couple people in the grocery store as they leave
Nominal
data is only names, categories, labels, etc. (things that cannot be arranged or measured) (LOWEST LEVEL)
ex: black, red, blue, pink
Ordinal
data can be arranged but there are no differences between data values; no subtracting (SECOND LOWEST LEVEL)
ex: poor, okay, great
Interval
data can be arranged and have differences but there is no set starting time (SECOND HIGHEST LEVEL)
ex: 350*, 400*, 450* (oven temps)
Ratio
data can be arranged in order, there are differences, there is a starting point, values are meaningful (HIGHEST LEVEL)
ex: 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place
Discrete
distinct countable whole numbers
ex: cars in a parking lot, results of a dice rolled
Continuous
numbers that are measurable and can include fractions or decimals
ex: persons weight, time taken to run a mile
Random Sampling
every member of a population has an equal chance at being selected
Systematic Sampling
starting point is chosen then a select number after that is selected
ex: every 3rd person in the line is selected
Convenience Sampling
using data/results that is readily available
ex: waiting by a room and everyone who walks by between 12:00-1:00 is selected
Stratified Sampling
diving the population into 2+ groups and selecting some from each group
ex: Group 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ; Group 2: A, B, C, D, E, F
Cluster Sampling
dividing the population into 2+ groups and selecting some from one group and none from the others
ex: Group 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ; Group 2: A, B, C, D, E, F
