Keratinocytes- Make Keratin
Melanocytes- Make melanin pigment

-Stratum Corneum
-Stratum Lucidum
-Stratum ganulosum
-Stratum Spinosum
-Stratum Basale (right above the dermis)

papillary layer- thin layer atop dermis
Reticular layer- thick bottom layer of dermis
Sensory Structures of Dermis
-Free nerve endings
-Lamellated corpuscle ( respond to pressure)
-Tactile Corpuscle (respond to light touch)
-Root hair plexus
Sebaceous gland
Made of stratified cuboidal epithelium
secretes sebum through hair follicles
Eccrine Sweat Gland
Widely distributed,
produces via pores to cool body down
Apocrine Sweat Gland
In axillary and pubic areas
Produces secretions that act as pheromones and empty sweat into hair follicles
Nail Body
The visible keratinized part of the nail
Eponychium
The skin folding over the corners of the nail body
Lanula
The light half moon on the nail body
Nail Matrix
Contains germinal cells that divide to produce new nail material
Nail Root
The part imbedded into the skin and attaches to the epidermis
Root Hair Plexus
A network of dendrites wrapped around the base of the hair follicle
Hair Shaft
The portion of the hair projecting out of the skin’s surface
Hair Root
The submerged portion of the nail that contains the nail bulb
Hair Follicle
Surrounds the Root
Arrector Pili Muscle
Connects to the hair follicle
