stages of mitosis
prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase

prophase
chromosomes condense, nuclear envelope breaks, spindle fiber starts to form
prometaphase
spindle fibers interact w/ sister chromatids (spindle apparatus forms) moving them towards the center

metaphase
duplicated sister chromosomes align along the middle, each pair of chromatids is attached to both poles by kinetochore microtubules

anaphase
sister chromatids move towards opposite sides

telophase
nuclear membrane reforms to form two separate nuclei
cytokinesis
divides the mother cell into two daughter cells (animals; cleavage furrow) (plants; cell plate)
S phase (interphase)
Chromosomes are replicated, two copies of a replicated chromosome (chromatid) are joined at centromeres to form sister chromatids
meiosis I
separate homologus chromosomes
Meiosis I : Prophase I
Homologous chromosomes pair up (synapsis), and crossing over occurs (creates genetic variation)
meiosis I : metaphase I
Homologous chromosome pairs line up in the middle with random assortment (independent assortment)
Meiosis I : Anaphase I
Homologous chromosomes separate, sister chromatids stay together
meosis I : telophase I
cell divides producing two haploid cells
meosis II

meosis II : prophase
spindle forms and chromosomes condense
