Anatomy
The study of the body's structures, focusing on what body parts are and where they are located.
Physiology
The study of the body's functions, focusing on what body parts do and how they work together.
Chemical Level
The smallest building blocks of the body, consisting of atoms and molecules such as water, glucose, and proteins.
Cellular Level
The basic units of life; all cells have similar structures but different functions.
Tissue Level
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.
Organ Level
Structures made of two or more different types of tissues working together to perform a specific job.
Organ System Level
Groups of organs that work together to carry out major functions in the body.
Organism Level
The complete living individual in which all organ systems work together to maintain life.
Homeostasis
The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment even when the outside environment changes.
Stimulus
A change that occurs in the body, such as high blood sugar or high body temperature.
Receptor
The component that detects a change in the body; examples include thermoreceptors and nerve endings.
Control Center
The component that processes information and determines the response, such as the brain, spinal cord, or endocrine glands.
Effector
The component that carries out the response, such as muscles or glands.
Feedback Loop
A cycle the body uses to detect a change, decide how to respond, and restore or continue that change.
Negative Feedback Loop
The most common feedback mechanism that maintains homeostasis by reversing a change to return a variable toward its normal range or set point.
Positive Feedback Loop
A feedback mechanism that reinforces or amplifies the original change until a specific endpoint is reached, such as in childbirth.
Anatomical Position
The universal reference position where the body is standing upright, eyes and head facing forward, arms at sides with palms forward, and feet shoulder-width apart.
Sagittal Plane
A flat surface that divides the body into right and left portions.
Midsagittal Plane
A specific sagittal plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
A plane that divides the body into a front half and a back half.
Transverse Plane
A plane that divides the body into a top half and a bottom half; also called cross sections.
Superior
Directional term meaning above another body part.
Inferior
Directional term meaning below another body part.
Medial
Directional term meaning closer to the body's midline.
Lateral
Directional term meaning farther from the body's midline.
Proximal
Directional term meaning closer to the trunk or point of attachment.
Distal
Directional term meaning farther from the trunk or point of attachment.
Anterior (Ventral)
Directional term meaning toward the front of the body.
Posterior (Dorsal)
Directional term meaning toward the back of the body.
Superficial
Directional term meaning closer to the body's surface.
Deep
Directional term meaning farther from the body's surface.
Dorsal Body Cavity
A major body cavity that contains the cranial cavity (brain) and the vertebral cavity (spinal cord).
Ventral Body Cavity
A major body cavity that contains the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity.
Epithelial Tissue
Tissue that covers and lines body surfaces and cavities, aiding in protection, absorption, secretion, and filtration.
Connective Tissue
Tissue that supports, connects, protects, and binds other tissues and organs together; examples include bone, blood, and fat.
Muscle Tissue
Tissue that contracts to create movement; categorized as skeletal, cardiac, or smooth.
Nervous Tissue
Tissue made of neurons that detects changes, processes information, and sends electrical signals throughout the body.
