Osteoporosis
A condition characterized by decreased bone mass, making bones porous, brittle, and fragile.
Bone resorption
The process where bone is broken down and its minerals released into the bloodstream; in osteoporosis, this occurs at a greater rate than bone formation.
Compression fractures
Fractures that commonly occur in the spine due to osteoporosis, where the vertebrae collapse.
Vitamin D
A vitamin essential for calcium absorption, critical for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
Calcitonin
A hormone used in the treatment of osteoporosis, which helps regulate calcium levels in the body.
Osteomyelitis
An infection of the bone, often caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Debridement surgery
A surgical procedure to remove infected or necrotic tissue, often used in the treatment of osteomyelitis.
Contusion
A soft tissue injury caused by blunt force, characterized by pain, swelling, and discoloration.
Strain
Injury to a muscle or tendon characterized by pain, edema, spasm, and loss of function.
Sprain
Injury to ligaments and supporting muscle fibers around a joint, presenting with pain and edema.
Dislocation
A condition in which the articular surfaces of a joint are not in contact, causing pain and loss of mobility.
RICE Treatment
A method of managing soft tissue injuries which includes Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
